Qualification/Norms in Recruitment of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSsP)
Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission TNPSC is a body constituted under Article 315 of the Constitution of India. One of the functions of the Commission as laid down in Article 320 of the Constitution is to conduct examination for appointment to various State and Subordinate services of the State of Tamil Nadu.
In order to streamline the processing of applications TNPSC has developed an application form, which can be processed on computerized machines. The application form supplied along with this brochure can be filled up and submitted to the Commission.
Filling up of vacancies by Direct Recruitment
The Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission notifies vacancies in various posts in Tamil and English dailies which are in wide circulation. The number of such vacancies notified by the Commission is only approximate and is liable to modification with reference to vacancy position at any time before or at the time of actual recruitment
Following the 30% reservation of appointment for female candidates, due number of vacancies out of the total vacancies in each communal category are notified as being reserved for female candidates. If no qualified and suitable female candidates are available for selection against such vacancies , such vacancies shall be filled by male candidates belonging to the respective communal categories. These clause will not apply to the recruitment meant exclusively for men or women
Ten percent of vacancies out of thirty percent vacancies, set apart for women, shall be set apart for Destitute widows and the first vacancy in every ten vacancies set apart for women in each category viz. The General Turn, Backward Classes, Most Backward Classes/ Denotified communities, Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes shall be set apart for Destitute Widows shall go to the women (other than Destitute widows belonging to the respective communal categories. In the event of non-availability of qualified and suitable Destitute Widows /women (other than Destitute Widows ) candidates for selection, the vacancy will be filled by male candidates, belonging to the respective communal categories.
However, the said reservation of appointments will not apply for the posts in the Scale of pay the minimum of which exceeds Rs.4,000/
Explanation: "Destitute widow" referred to above shall mean a widow whose income from all sources shall not be more than Rs.1000/ (Rupees one thousand only) including any family pension or other receipts including any family pension or other receipts including income from private practice in the case of professionals. Such candidates should produce a certificate from the R.D.O. or the Asst. Collector or the sub collector concerned in the format prescribed. Destitute widow shall not include a divorcee.
FEE: Examination fee will be levied at the following rates from the candidates who apply in response to an Advertisement Notification issued by the commission and who are not exempted from payment of fee:
A. Main written Examination / Written Examination cum-oral Test

Method of selection
Age Must be above 21 years
Age relaxation S.C./S.T.-35 Years , Most Backward Classes/Denotified communities, Backward classes and Destitute widows of all Castes. 30 years for others. Concessions in the matter of age, qualification and /or fees allowed to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Most backward classes, Destitute Widows, Ex-Service men Physically handicapped persons, Discharged and serving Temporary State Government employees below 40 years of age, etc., are given in the Commission's "instructions etc., to Candidates"
Must possess the following or such other qualification as have been declared to be higher than or equivalent to the said qualification by the State Government in consultation with the Committee constituted under the Chairman ship of the Chairman, Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission for the purpose A Degree of any of the universities incorporated by an Act of the central or State Legislature in India or any other educational institution established by an Act of Parliament or declared to be deemed as a University under section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act 1956 Note: Other things being equal, preference will be given to the candidates who possess the qualification mentioned against each of the following post. Deputy Superintendent of Police (Category I) A Degree or Diploma in Criminology and Forensic Science and also to those who poses National Award for Physical efficiency
Physical Qualification For men Must not be less than 165 cms in Height and not less than 86 cms found the chest on full inspiration and must have a chest expansion of not less than 5 cms on full inspiration. ii) For women must not be less than 155 cms in Height. The Chest measurement will not apply to them.
Procedure of Selection
This Selection will be made in two successive stages.
Preliminary Examination for selection of candidates for admission to the Main Written Examination. The Preliminary examination is meant to serve as a screening test only. The marks obtained in the preliminary examination by the candidates who are declared qualified for admission to the Main Written examination will not be counted for determining their final order of merit. The number of candidates to be admitted to the Main Written Examination will exactly ten times the number of candidates to be recruited having regard to the rule of reservation of appointments
Main Written Examination for selection of candidates: The main examination will consist of a qualifying examination, a main written examination and an oral test. The qualifying examination will consist of one paper. The main written examination will consist of 6 papers. The scheme and subjects for the main written examination will be as shown in the annexure. The main written examination will precede the oral test.
If the number of vacancies notified / reserved to be filled from any one or more of the reservation groups (viz. Schedules Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Most Backward classes / Denotified Communities, Backward classes or General Turn) is five and above, the number of candidates to be admitted to the oral test shall be two times the number of vacancies to be recruited against those reservation groups, based on the marks obtained by the candidates at the main written examination. Similarly, if the number of vacancies in any one or more of the remaining reservation groups of the same recruitment is four and below, the number of candidates to be admitted to the oral test of those particular reservation groups shall be three times the number of vacancies to be recruited against those reservation groups. The final selection will be made on the basis of the marks obtained by the candidates at the main written examination and oral test taken together subject to the rule of reservation of appointments. Appearance at the main written examination and oral test is compulsory. The candidates who have not appeared for any of the subjects in the main written examination and oral test will not be considered for selection even if they secure the minimum qualifying marks for selection.
In case a candidate is found to have not qualified himself / herself in the qualifying examination his / her answer books in the optional subjects and General Studies will not be considered and evaluated. The marks obtained in the qualifying examination will not be taken into consideration for final ranking. The marks obtained by the candidates appearing in the oral test, both in the main written examination as well as in the oral test will be published in the notice board in the office of the Tamilnadu Public Service Commission in the evening either on the last day fixed for oral test or on the succeeding working day. The same will also be made available on the internet in the Commission's Website www.tnpsc.org
An applicant selected for appointment to the post of Deputy Superintendent of Police (Category.I) must satisfy the Medical Board in Tamilnadu as to his / her physique fitness and capacity for active outdoor work and must be certified by the Superintendent of Government Opthalmic Hospital, Chennai that his / her vision comes up to the requirements prescribed in the rules without the use of contact glasses.

Ex- Servicemen-Within 3 years from the date of discharge subject to a maximum of 45 years.

Chest Normal 81 cms with an expansion of 5 cms i.e.81-86 cms
Educational qualification ANY DEGREE
Physical Efficiency and Endurance Test - Running 5kms in 20 Minutes
Successful candidates have to undergo Physical Efficiency Test as follows. 3 events with a minimum qualifying marks of 9. (ONE star in 2 events and TWO stars in 1 event) and a maxmimum of 15 marks.

Sports quota : Existing 10% quota shall continue.If it isnot possible to fill up the sports quota of 10% the gap be filled up by the dependents of the serving personnel.
Quota for dependents of serving police personnel etc : 10% quota under direct recruitment for dependents of the serving police personnel and the wards/dependents of retired, deceased and medically invalidated police personnel.
The total percentage under serial No.1 & 2 should not exceed 20%
